We ate lunch at Ipho in St. Paul the other day and had a great meal. iPho remodeled and reopened about 2 years ago and if you haven’t gotten a chance to check out the improved digs, you should!
The restaurant is quite large and there are many tables- perfect for large groups. If want you want to start with a Vietnamese iced coffee, they use Cafe Du Monde coffee here!
Each table comes with the necessary condiments, including the very important chili oil.
The Fresh Spring Rolls were wrapped tightly and filled with roast pork, rice noodles and shrimp.
These banh mis were pretty darn good. The key was the bread. Ipho bakes their own bread in-house and assembles these delectable sandwiches in the front of the restaurant. They keep their bread recipe a secret and rightly so- it’s crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. The sandwich wasn’t dry at all thanks to the Asian mayo and pickled vegetables.
David and I both got the Grilled Pork Banh Mi. If you buy 3 carryout banh mis, you get the 4th sandwich free!
David got #1 pho with tripe, brisket, fresh eye round, flank, and tendon. The broth is more aromatic than meaty and they put just the right amount of protein in.
I got the #2 pho with fresh eye round. David and I think their pho is pretty good and apparently Andrew Zimmern does too! Give this family restaurant a try! If you’re new to Vietnamese food this is a great place to go- almost all the servers are young and speak English fluently so they can explain every little detail to you! (This is also a good side note for anyone with allergies- many people with allergies often find ethnic restaurants intimidating because of language barrier but that won’t be the case at iPho!)
