Pagoda (Minneapolis, MN: Dinkytown)

dim sum minneapolis

Pagoda is a fairly large Chinese restaurant located in the University area. They boast daily dim sum on Mon-Fri 11am- 3pm and Sat-Sun 10am-3pm. Their dim sum menu is here.  We’ve gone to pagoda several times now, twice for dim sum and once for dinner- all times have been very good.  Above is a picture of their fried/dessert cart.  We’ve eaten the fried sesame balls, $2.95, baked BBQ pork bun, $3.95 and the egg tarts (my recipe is here), $3.95.  I adore all three of those items and will absolutely order them again at Pagoda.  The fried sesame balls are very dense, doughy and slightly sweet.  The baked BBQ pork bun is glazed on top and served cold.  The BBQ pork filling inside is savory and sweet!  The egg tarts are these little custard tarts with extremely flaky crusts- you’ll want to order extras.

dim sum dumplings

Starting at the top and going clockwise we ate sticky rice with chicken in lotus leaf, $4.95, pan fried turnip cake, $3.95, shrimp and peanut dumplings, steamed shrimp dumplings, $4.25, pork and shrimp dumpling and shumai (pork and shrimp open-faced dumplings).  I love all the pork and shrimp dumplings.  The sticky rice in lotus leaf seems to be more of an acquired taste with a licorice note, but interesting.  Fried turnip cakes will be sure to fill you up if you order them.

steam buns

Here we ordered fish balls, $4.25, steamed BBQ pork buns, $2.95, and steamed chicken buns, $2.95. The fish balls weren’t that fishy, but it still wasn’t a stand-out dish to me. The steamed buns were solid, but I prefer the baked BBQ buns over the steamed buns.

Going clockwise: steamed pork rib, $3.95, chickens feet, $3.95, fried crab claw, $5.95, steamed chive dumpling, $3.95, and shumai. Even if the pork ribs don’t look that appetizing, they taste great- definitely an order-again. Still not a huge fan of chickens feet but they offer them if you like them! The crab claw was stuffed with more crab and then fried, pretty tasty. Not pictured, we ordered chinese broccoli in oyster sauce, $5.95, shrimp fun gor dumplings, $4.25 and shrimp fun roll, $4.25. I always try to order some greens during dim sum and this broccoli hit the spot. I love love love shrimp fun rolls and would order these again!
